Public Campaigns
One of the most notable characteristics of Pullman is the fact that he is very vocal publicly about politics and education. On his website he describes his views on education as "eccentric but unimportant". Here is a list of his political campaigns:
Age and Gender Labeling of Books
In 2008 Pullman led a campaign against the introduction of age brands on the covers of children's books. Over 1200 authors, illustrators, booksellers, librarians rallied behind him, and even his own publisher Scholastic agreed not to publish age brands on Pullman's books. He also supported the Let Books be Books campaign against the gendered labeling of books. Pullman and His Views on Religion
Pullman is most known for his negative opinions on organized religion (especially the Catholic Church). Although he calls himself an atheist, he has also been on record saying that he is also agnostic. Pullman is part of the British Humanist Association, of which many of his speeches are uploaded on YouTube by the society, and an honorary associate of the National Secular Society. He has been widely critique by Christians on his His Dark Materials trilogy, as we will see in the Controversy section. Here are some videos in which Pullman himself speaks about his views on religion.
